Protein is essential for the growth and maintenance of all body tissues. It supplies the amino acids required for building muscle, blood, skin, hair and all the organs of the body. Protein is also required for energy, and for the formation of hormones, enzymes and antibodies-substances that help the body to fight invasion by bacteria and viruses.
Unlike fat and carbohydrate, protein is not stored by the body for future use. It must therefore be consumed throughout the day to prevent fatigue, weakness and muscle breakdown. Protein can also help you to control your body fat levels, as when it is eaten, it helps the stomach to feel full, and suppresses hunger. |
