Curt's Story
I am strong believer that everyone will have one or more life changing events in their lifetime. I want to help people not only get through these events, but also transform themselves so that they are healthier, happier and more balanced. I have completely changed my direction in life to become a personal trainer in the hopes of helping other people, as I was helped through challenges myself.
At the age of 13, I encountered my first life challenge; the first of a series of painful reoccurring knee injuries that lead to repetitive surgeries and rehabilitation. After the second injury at 15, I was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter Syndrome. I was forced to give up all high impact sports and focus on competitive swimming. I managed to qualify for the Junior National level when I suffered a third injury. Discouraged by the continued setbacks, I decided to retire from swimming and focus on my CEGEP studies.
During this period I took weight lifting as my Physical Education elective. I credit my interest in weight training to Andre Begin, my college Phys Ed teacher; he was an inspirational and a motivational factor. I gained muscle mass, saw positive changes in my physical appearance and was motivated to work out harder during my stay at John Abbott College. However, I only started taking bodybuilding seriously later in life.
After CEGEP, I went to McGill University to study Metallurgical Engineering, a four year Co-op program. My first year of studies was very difficult and left little time for the gym, and with bad eating habits I quickly gained weight. I saw a picture of myself at the end of year banquet and decided it was time to make some changes. After a year of training and diet I drastically altered my physique, and I was asked to try out for the football team. After being on the team for two seasons I realized that football wasn’t for me, there was too much politics involved, and I was only interested in playing the game.
I went back to McGill to study a Masters in Mineral Economics. However, looking back at myself I recognize that I was not inspired to be an engineer; I was just following a set of expectations that I had created for myself.
In March 2006, I unexpectedly found myself back in the hospital, my large intestine ruptured and I had to have a 6-inch section removed. I was diagnosed as having Crohn’s Disease and told I would have to make major changes to my diet. I went through a lengthy healing process and during this time decided to learn how to take care of my body by eating and training properly. In February of 2008, after only a month of proper exercise and nutrition, I went from 265 lbs to 230 lbs, with very low body fat. The results I achieved in the short period of time were incredible.
I was hooked; I realized how much I loved sculpting my body and the challenges that came with it. I decided to put my Engineering studies on hold; it just wasn’t what I wanted to do. A year after recovering from a dislocated and slightly fractured hip, I entered my first contest at the 2009 Fame East Championships. I won Open Male Bodybuilding and Open Male Muscle Model. Transitioning from muscle modelling and committing to bodybuilding, I aspire to always improve!
